Former Weekend Sunrise host and AFL commentator Basil Zempilas elected Lord Mayor of Perth

Former Weekend Sunrise star Basil Zempilas has been elected the brand new Lord Mayor of Perth.

The TV and radio persona beat his important competitor, former ABC journalist Di Bain, by 284 votes to say victory at Council House, Perth on Saturday night.

‘Perth has given my household great alternative, and it has given me great alternative, and it is the identical alternative that Perth can present for all of its residents, the 49-year-old stated in his victory speech.

Zempilas passionately continued: ‘Now the job for us is to get busy and to do our very, absolute best for ratepayers, for residents, for guests and for individuals who select to spend time within the City of Perth.

‘It is one of the best metropolis on the earth. We are splendidly blessed to be its custodians for a short while, so let’s not waste that chance, let’s take advantage of that chance,’ he added as spouse Amy stood by his aspect.

Basil will proceed his work commitments with 7NEWS however will relieve himself from his 6PR breakfast present internet hosting position.

After saying his plans to run for Lord Mayor in July, Basil was charged with battle of curiosity claims, with considerations he may use his media platform to advertise his marketing campaign. 

The TV host denied these claims, telling The Weekend Australian on Sunday that he plans to ‘play by the foundations’. 

‘It can be an unfair benefit if I regularly used it as a platform for my election, however that isn’t what I’m going to do,’ he stated.

Basil denied those claims, saying: 'Like everybody else is entitled to continue to work in their chosen professions if they stand for office, I think as long as I play fair and play by the rules, and the rules we set for ourselves, then in my mind it's okay'

Basil is a well-known face in West Australia, and in March 2018, he was co-host of Weekend Sunrise, changing Andrew O’Keefe. 

In September 2019, he stepped down as common host of Weekend Sunrise, nonetheless continued to look as a fill-in presenter. 

The TV star is has been married to longtime girlfriend Amy Graham since 2009, with the pair tying the knot in Greece.  They share two daughters and a son.
